Inmate's death by suicide under investigation at Devils Lake jail
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. -- A Lake Region Correctional Center inmate killed himself Sunday morning, Sept. 2, officials said.
The Devils Lake Police Department is investigating the death of David James Grove, 57, of Devils Lake, jail Director Rob Johnson said. He confirmed Grove’s death was caused by self-inflicted injuries.
Grove was charged in Devils Lake Aug. 30 with 10 felony counts related to possessing child pornography and one count of uploading an explicit photo of a minor to the internet. He was arrested Aug. 30.
Grove served six months in prison for having child pornography in 2011. He could have faced up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine if convicted of the latest charges.
The Lake Regional Correctional Center inmate roster said Grove’s bond was set at $25,000 cash. He was scheduled to enter a plea Tuesday.
Officials said details are not immediately available because the investigation is ongoing.
The jail has faced criticism during the last few years for inmate escapes, allegations of staff misconduct and an in-custody suicide resulting from drug use.
The Lake Region Law Enforcement Center was at risk for closure last year after an investigation revealed 40 of the jail’s standards were not being met.
The investigation was prompted by the third inmate escape in two years. Investigators found the jail had outdated policies and inexperienced staff with a lack of training.
The jail also did not have a suicide prevention plan.
