Summer events are firing up this week, from car shows and rodeos to new plays and an old-fashioned block party.

Cruisin' Old Broadway Car Shows

Thursday, June 7

Summer is here and the time is right for cruising in the streets. Or in parking lots. The first Thursday of every month — except July — features a lineup of vintage automobiles parked behind the Old Broadway, 22 Broadway N., Fargo. The Cruisin' Old Broadway Car Shows series allows auto enthusiasts to get up close to inspect some classic rides. The display starts at 6 tonight.

John Hitchcock

John Hitchcock has been at the Plains Art Museum, 704 1st Ave., N., Fargo, all week as an artist in residence. The printmaker, currently based in Madison, Wis., discusses the work he's making at the Plains and his colorful portfolio at large at the Creative Voices Talk from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight.

Thursday-Sunday, June 10

If movies have told us anything, it's that prom is supposed to be the greatest night of a teenager's life. What happens behind the scenes of the big dance among a group of adults provides the real drama in Scott Ecker's play, "Chaperones." The work is the first for the new theater ensemble Cass Act Players, a socially conscious troupe that aims to "pay it forward" by offering some free performances to nursing homes and the disadvantaged. The magic happens at 7:30 Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at The Stage at Island Park, 333 4th St. S., Fargo. Tickets are $13 and $18;

Hawley Rodeo

Friday, June 8, and Saturday, June 9

Saddle up and ride, cowboy, ride. The Hawley Rodeo lets loose this weekend with plenty of fast-paced action. The main event starts Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., but the celebration rolls all day Saturday starting with a 5k run/walk at 8 a.m. An all-day street fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a kiddie parade and an ice cream social at 3. The Rodeo Fest parade starts at 4 and leads into the final night's event. Tickets range from $7 to $15;

Luna & Friends 2nd Annual Block Party

Sundays are generally slow days during summer as people drift back to town from the lakes. The folks at Luna Fargo, 1545 S. University Drive, give you something to plan around with the Luna & Friends 2nd Annual Block Party. Held behind the business, the shaded area hosts a mix of food and beverage offerings with activities and music. In addition to food from the restaurant, local craft beers, cocktails, wine and coffee will be served. Other participating groups include Becky's Plants and Flowers, Doubting Thomas Farms, Heart & Soil, Deep Dish Improv, Off the Deck Hot Sauce and Scoop N Dough Candy Co. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m.
